Spring, Show Thyself!
Tuesday, March 16, 2010
I think I'm cocooning a bit. I do go out. See? I even hung out with this cool chick the other day, although she is not normally this shade of cadaver:
I'm just a little frayed, I have a few loose ends waving around, each with their own little white flag, and so if I seem a bit socially withdrawn, this is why.
I was being a bit hard on myself over the last few weeks, but it occurred to me last night that I should really stop doing that. I've decided that my default position until Spring honestly and truly kicks in is that I am pretty close to the epitome of awesome and that even those who are pretty close to the epitome of awesome need some down time now and again.
It is still going to take a while before stuff starts growing around here in Saskatchewan, so why don't you tell me about the weather, plants, and other spring-like wonders around your part of the world? I'm kind of hungry for some warmer weather.

There's a tree outside my window that was covered in snow (and breaking!) during the last snow storm, but now it's already budding. ^_^;; I'm so excited to see leaves again.
First you must know that I live in California where the weather NEVER gets as cold as it does where you are. But my two most favorite signs of spring have already popped out of the ground and I am fully in fever mode. The daffodils were first to show themselves and now the poppies are springing up everywhere.
Spring weather where I am means sunny and highs in the 70s one minute, and cold and snowy the next. It's pretty nice now, but some wet snow looks likely for the weekend. Thankfully, it won't stick around.
Umm... it's snow-mouldy. But I just live in Edmonton.
Here in Columbus Ohio it was a beautiful 50 degrees today. In fact, my two year old and I shared our first ice cream cone of the season. Sitting in the sun with our jackets zipped all the way up sharing slobbery licks from a soft serve twist cone. I promise you sun. I know you can make it!
I live in Florida. It doesn't get better than this (except maybe Hawaii, but I'm terrified of getting into a plane and letting it hurl me across the Pacific). 67 degrees and sunny, yet it's not warm enough for me! :)
Thankfully, I have crawled out from under my seasonally depressed rock. Hallelujah.
The last circle of snow finally melted from the shady spot in the backyard last week. A dozen carrots were planted on Friday. Then it rained 5 inches in 2 days. Today was warm enough to break a mild sweat while wearing a light fleece jacket in the sun. The chickweed is brilliant in bloom, but that didn't stop me from pulling it right up from the roots with my bare hands.
I have a loaf of a white bread in my car to take my kidlets to feed the ducks at the local park tomorrow. The aviary people tell me this is the equivalent of giving them snickers bars and to use romaine lettuce but it just doesn't get the same response so we stick to Wonder. My peach iris is showing green through all the stuff I never cut back last year and I saw a fly today. Spring is springing and it will come to you, promise.
Get thee to a flower shop and buy yourself a small bouquet of colourful fresh flowers. Even just half-a-dozen carnations. Just do it! It will lift your spirits, I promise.
Snow is gone, temps are rising, crocus and their brethren have pushed their way through the ground are preparing to bloom... though our crocus and tulips were all dug up by chipmunks last year. Bon Appetit, chipmunks! (I was going to say "Fuck you, chipmunks!" but I don't really care about my flowers that much).
BTW, is that That Girl?
Sumo, that is That Girl!
Take those cloves of garlic that have the little green nubbly ends popping out and stick them in a pot of any old dirt. Water them liberally and soon you will have garlic chives smelling of spring and ready to be mown down for use in salads or whatever tasty dish you're cooking up that day.
i saw the voluptuous erotic pink fleshy shoots of the rhubarb and peonies today.
Magpie, did you ever make spring sound dirty :)
Two days ago I went away overnight. When I came back, the first tiny daffodil was in bloom. In the park there's a purple carpet of crocus, and I swear that the cherry tree's buds are going to pop any day soon.
For the record, it has been cold and nasty here in England for far longer than anyone wanted, and we are all as crazy for this late and gentle spring as I remember being in March in Saskatchewan. The day of sun smelling air is coming - I promise.
