Surprise! Shinny!
Saturday, January 9, 2010 I was walking home from work just a short while ago and found that a street spanning the width of downtown had been closed down for what looked like a shinny tournament for the munchkin set.
They ran around in thunking boots screaming and swinging hockey sticks while their parents stood curbside and shivered under blankets. I could hear coaches yelling at the younger players to remember to cover someone.
I wanted to take a picture of the row of hockey moms with window seats in the coffee shop so that I could show you the true spirit of toque hair, but my picture-taking was raising suspicion.
I decided to pretend to be one of the moms and yelled "Hurry!", but then I realized that that is for curling. Me and hockey have never been very close.
Also, I didn't make a very convincing hockey mom when I knocked that kid over on the sidewalk. Oops.

LOVE that 3rd photo!
I agree, the third photo is brilliant. It would make a great print for a hockey mom wall. Typical Canadiana.
I want to have more kids so they can play hockey just from seeing your photos!
man, you have an amazing eye
flutter, I would love to take full credit for those, but those little buggers were moving so fast that I was just trying to get shots of them when they'd bunch up for three seconds. I was also trying to do it while still walking so that I wouldn't look some creepy stalker of stranger children.
Those are awesome photographs from an iPhone. Dreamy. I can feel the cold from here.
I love hockey and I admit to being really sucked in when I see kids playing hockey. Very envious of your photo op. Next time wait until they get near the net and just keep calling, "Center it! Center it!"
The shinny game was to stretc from Albert St to Broad St (about 8 blocks)in an attempt at the Guinness record for the longest shinny game in connection with the Olympic Torch Relay celebration today. That`s where I thought Nick Danny and the boys were playing ;)
Wow, you took these with an iPhone? Color me impressed.
