Twitter And The Furries And I

The Bloggess put out a call on Twitter this morning,

and I casually responded with a mention that I once had a childhood crush on one of the big muppet monsters from "The Muppet Show", which was Sweetums, to be precise,

and then The Bloggess said that that was kind of fucked up,

which made me swoon a little, because it is somehow awesome when The Bloggess says that you are kind of fucked up, but it also taught me a couple of very important lessons.

If you choose to mention an old muppet crush on Twitter:

  • You can expect to be labelled a furry*.
  • Several of your followers will come out of their own little furry closets.
  • Also, several of your followers will unfollow you within minutes, because they could not handle the great rainbow of difference that makes up our beautiful world.
  • And, because The Bloggess has over 12,000 followers on Twitter, you will gain a bunch of new followers of your own whose intentions you are really suspicious about, and you'll feel like maybe you should let everyone know that you don't own a big puppy costume or anything even remotely resembling fun fur but that you have nothing against them being sexually attracted to stuffed animals and people dressed up as stuffed animals, it's just that your personal furry-ish phase ended at around the age of eight, but you can still talk furries if they want to, because you're pretty cool with it, but you don't tweet that, because someone is liable to say something like "me thinks Schmutzie doth protest too much", and then everyone will think I am a furry forever, when really people in costumes kind of freak me out, and I don't even do Halloween.

  • And you? What did you learn today?

    ----------------------------

    * I want to clear up that not all furries are into the sexual or pornographic element of the fetish, but that it was just this particular Twitter conversation's overtly sexual tone which referred to that particular subset of furry fans.

Well, I didn't learn anything about the furry sub-culture, and I may or may not be disappointed in that fact. But, I did learn that you have awesome taste in music! Why create my own playlist when I can listen happily to yours?! Is that wrong? My husband calls it a "conservation of effort". But he's an engineer and therefore can't be trusted.

I remember reading an article in Spin magazine about Furries back in the day, probably when raving was coming out from the underground. I was about 16 at the time, and was thoroughly traumatized. Nowadays I have a broader view.

I had a major crush on Donatello the Ninja Turtle when I was a kid. Does it still make me a furry if my love didn't have any fur?

Well I know this may taken a toll on your day but it made mine much better. So thank you for that.

And elfini- schmutzie and her man palinode have amazing taste in music. They're a power duo!

Everything that was once wrong with my day has now been corrected. The skies are blue. Let the weirdness glow.

Thank you. Oh, thank you. Utterly, blissfully howling with laughter.

LOL ROTF ooooh the things I could say ... sigh ...

I'm married to a tiny ferret ... and um ... my best manager is a tiny ferret 1/2 the time and a furry 1/2 the time ... and ... we do have a "guardian" that is a tiny bald eagle 1/2 the time and a furry 1/2 the time (furry at heart 100%) ... and well ... sometimes I'm a tiny rabbit, or a tiny dragon, or a tiny koala, or a tiny mango bird ... yes a mango bird ... the rest of the time I'm a "human" ... well sometimes I'm fae. One of my very best friends is a tiny Cat ... and on and on it goes.

Ok so the deal is I co-own a sim in Second Life with my sl (second life) /rl (real life) husband. I manage the mall that we run there and occasionally my own art sneaks in.

The sim is a simulated 3D world. Our sim is an ultra PG world.

"Tinies" are generally super ultra PG and often play naive -- much like a young critter in Bambi might. Some of the Tinies are more grown up in their speech patterns but don't count on them always behaving mature.

"Furries" in SL are just the same as RL (real life) and run the full range. Most that come to visit us can adopt a polite mannerism faster than many of the "humans."

In our normal day to day lives ... We are ("very" some say) conservative in our political and religious views (Southern Baptist).

How can it be? All this dichotomy? All I can say is ... it's not exactly the world we set out to create ... but it is exactly one of our best opportunities to care about others.

Soooo em wanna come visit me in my world? (Yes, Smutzie, even you!)

http://sn.im/aislphotos Photos on Flickr ... totally PG and charming.

I had a huuuge crush on Gonzo. Still kinda do, actually. So wacky. So vulnerable.

I guess I always wanted to hug them. Assuming their fur is very clean.

I'm really racking my brain to think of something weird like this. But I can't. Damn.

Chewbacca? He was kinda hot. Yeah, OK, I'll go with Chewbacca.
