In 1847, Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure, the commissionaire of wines in a small French town, used the gospel of Luke to guide him as he wrote "O Holy Night" at the behest of his parish priest. Orignally intended to be a poem, it became clear to Placide that the words deserved a score, and he set his friend Adam Adolphe-Charles to the task of writing music to his words. Little did they know what would befall their grand creation...
