Five Star Friday's 148th Edition Is Brought to You By William Faulkner
Thursday, May 5, 2011
This Five Star Friday roundup is brought to you by irony at the movies, a lost child, the Canadian election, ageing in sports, Donald Trump and his possible run for the American Presidency, a photo of the White House's situation room, final weblog entries before dying, an offense to the media's bourgeois sensibilities, fiction in memoirs, comfort, a precious gift, unnecessary political foufera, a bad mother, the history behind Cinco de Mayo, a warning about the sneakiness of alcoholism, watching a child grow up with autism, being female in a man's world, and William Faulkner:

If a writer has to rob his mother, he will not hesitate: The "Ode On a Grecian Urn" is worth any number of old ladies. If you've written something good this week and don't see it here, feel free to link to it in the comments and add to the roundup. Thanks!

Happy Friday!
"Friday's Child" from Crib Chronicles:
my mouth twists up in a wry little smile that it's his loss in the shuffle that i mourn, when he is, after all, already lost. the forest and the trees. how much time do you need to honour something so brief? i know the world does not stop. i no longer ask it to."Liberals, Media Declare Class War On Single Mom" from Simple Massing Priest
"I Can't Tell If Movies Are Being Serious Anymore" by Daniel O'Brien at Cracked.com
"Truth, Fiction, Hózho" from The Deep Old Desk:
I used to think I wanted to write a book about my time on the reservation. The more I learned about publishing the more I let go of that desire because nothing horribly tragic happened to me there. There would be no gruesome scenes or grand romance or To Sir with Love moments. For a memoir to succeed these days it's almost imperative for them to be even more over-the-top than fiction, so it doesn't surprise me when I learn that parts of a memoir have been fictionalized. It's disappointing, yes. But I can imagine reasons for it, not that those reasons make it right."The Final Post" from Queen of Spain Blog
"Oh... Canada. You Know..." from From the Dock
"Look" from One Crafty Mother:
If you're wondering about your own drinking; if you're reading this and thinking that woman in the ambulance could never be you, if you're telling yourself 'I'll never be that bad', consider this a warning."My Bubble" from Stories of Conflict and Love
It happens fast, and more often than not we don't see it coming, because we're too afraid to look.
So please look.
"The Captain and Denial" from Joe Blogs
"The Magical Vulva of Opportunity" from Pamie.com:
"You're a mid-level female writer. People are always going to need one of you in the room. It's great. You can go from failed sitcom to failed sitcom for the next six or seven years. You're all set.""Vandelay Industries, Kel Varnsen Speaking." from Flurrious
After he finished giving me that Thinner-esque curse, I closed my eyes. Took a deep breath. I forced the angry Little Pam inside me to stay quiet and not get baited, not grab my nearest copy of Bitch Magazine, roll it up into a twat-baton and say something like:
"Well, THANK YOU for letting me know that I'm so lucky to be blessed with this MAGICAL VULVA OF OPPORTUNITY! I can't wait to help others by letting them gaze upon this sacred gynopart that's filled with diversity-requirement-fulfilling jobs!"
"A Priceless Piece of Jewelry" from journeywithjesusinhaiti
"Thoughts On My Son's Getting Older and Getting Stranger" from The Squashed Bologna:
So an autistic toddler, while usually beyond exhausting to his or her family, often doesn't stand out quite so much to the world."Why the White House Situation Room Photo Is So Powerful" from Rex Hammock's RexBlog.com
Those of us who are there know, can see the telltale signs, but on a playground you have to look hard to spot them among the general chaos. They can sometimes pass; pass for "normal" (whatever that is).
But then your little kids grow up.
"A Political Football In a Teacup" from Neil Gaiman
"Cinco de Mayo" from Doves Today:
If the French had prevailed at Puebla, they would have strengthened the Confederacy - and even brought the French in on the side of the South. By denying the Confederate Army French support, the Mexican victory allowed Lincoln's army to turn the tide at Gettysburg just 14 months later. It's hard to know how the Civil War would have without that turning moment, but it's clear we would be a different America than we are today."Spare Me This Shit" from I Am Doing the Best I Can
