Five Star Friday's 149th Edition Is Brought to You By Charles Morgan
Friday, May 13, 2011
This Five Star Friday roundup is brought to you by making the world a little less ugly, wedding customs, emotional healing, a traffic accident, becoming a mother, a daughter's love for a difficult parent, the critical dissection of a song,
a trip down memory lane, fighting back against street harrassment, writing, a defense of alcoholism, and Charles Morgan:
Happy Friday!

a trip down memory lane, fighting back against street harrassment, writing, a defense of alcoholism, and Charles Morgan:
The art of living does not consist in preserving and clinging to a particular mood of happiness, but in allowing happiness to change its form without being disappointed by the change, for happiness, like a child, must be allowed to grow up.Take a moment to share your own good writing in the comments. We like you.

Happy Friday!
"Every Little Thing" from Edenland:
Her beautiful, gorgeous husband Alex was a talented artist. We got some of his art printed up onto three canvasses."When I Became a Mother" from She Likes Purple
Then we waltzed inside the cancer ward at the hospital and put them up. Just like that. Vee had bought these sticky things and I did the dirty work with my man hands. No permission. We left a piece of the world goddamn less ugly than we had found it, and I am fiercely proud of us for that.
"Intersection" from TwoBusy
"Dear Mom" from Slouching Past 40:
Once you told me that you counted it as a virtue that you never hit me or Daniel, that so often it was your first instinct to hit, as you had been hit yourself, and that is what you knew, all you knew. I blanched. Could it really be counted as a virtue, that you never struck us?"Cycles of Commitment: Relationships For Grown-Ups" by Amy Palko at Roots of She
Now I see. It can, and I'm grateful for it.
"In Da iPod" from Mimi Smartypants
Trigger warning — discussion of sexual violence:
"We've Got Your Back" by Emily May at Hollaback!:
that is what it feels like to be part of Hollaback: we are an incredible team. Independently, we are like bees. Weak, small, and always buzzing that street harassment is not OK. Collectively though, we’re working together seamlessly to make the impossible possible. To bring awareness to an issue that has been ignored for too long, and to lead this movement in our own communities."Labouring" from Writing Out Loud
I feel honored to be buzzing alongside the most badass bees on earth, and knowing that no matter what comes our way, we will always have each other’s backs.
"Youston" from The Holmes
"Minutes and Reflection" from Honea Express:
You know everything about me. You know the highlights and skimmed the details. I saw you at a bar and we nodded with a smile. We couldn’t remember our names."Writer's Block..." from Karl Fogsen
I read your obituary and regretted it all. You’ll visit this summer and we’ll go to the beach. Please, tell your sister that I said hello.
