Five Star Friday's 112th Edition (on a Tuesday!) Is Brought to You By Cormac McCarthy

I never had any doubts about my abilities. I knew I could write. I just had to figure out how to eat while doing this.

— Cormac McCarthy
This Five Star Friday roundup is brought to you by human rights, women, love of daughters, parenting kids with special challenges, depression, love, the business of blogging, an ill child, kids, grief, a television crush, cold feet, marriage, film, painting, and abortion.

Share urls to your own good writing in the comments. I command you!

Happy Tuesday!

"The Right to Say Goodbye" from Miserable Bliss:
And when I have done my best to stay alive, I would like to die with dignity. In a manner of my choosing at the time of my choosing. I believe it’s my right, whether my government chooses to agree or not.
" Feminism: A Four Letter Word No More" from Nerdy Vernacular

"In Love" from Single Mom At Work

"Adversary" from She Was.:
Home, I think how nice it is to be on the same team. I’m not defended because I don’t need defending, but I am supported, complimented, understood. I think how nice it is to be in the company of a good man, of a good friend, of someone whose main motivation is not to fuck me. I think of his blue eyes and of spill, of all those years and that first knowing and I cry because we are still arguing, my friend and I, still making our cases on the same side, and I, I will not want.
"Let's Give Us All a Pat On the Back" from Maternally Challenged

"Don't Give Up." by The Bloggess at Ask the Bloggess

"Commodification, Branding and the Overall Fuckery of Blogging" from Knotty Yarn:
There are a lot of talented writers out there who receive well-deserved recognition for their blogs. There are also a lot of really loud people out there who may not be talented, interesting, or at all provocative but get recognition (and paychecks) for their blogs because they're shouting the loudest about their brand. And that, THAT is the new face of blogging.

I vascillate wildly on my feelings about this. On the one hand, I think it's phenomenal that people (particularly women) are able to make money in non-traditional ways. It speaks to the changing nature of business, a change that I believe is sorely needed. On the other hand, you can't just slap up a sponsored giveaway, start mercilessly calling attention to yourself and call yourself a brand. Or can you?
"On (not) Getting a Diagnosis" from No Points For Style

"The Ache" from All Adither

"Little Gods" from B. Hockey J.:
Gods destroy what you want and mess with who you are. They do this because there’s so much more—worlds and worlds—than you and what you want. And kids are more than kids. They’re little gods. Honor them.
"Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak whispers the o’er-fraught heart and bids it break." from Spin Me I Pulsate

"Relentless" by Grumpy Granny at Our Big Gayborhood

"The Future of Film" from In Palinode's Palace:
People now agree, with the success of Avatar and Toy Story 3, that 3D movies are here to stay. But the truth is that humanity is hungry for novelty, and that once home 3D televisions become commonplace, we will look for greater entertainment value from our theatres. I predict that within 10 years we will start watching four-dimensional and perhaps even five-dimensional films.
"Cold Feet" from Just Eat Your Cupcake

"An Open Letter to Mike Wolfe from American Pickers" from Tales From Clark Street

"The Golden Rose" from Paulo Coelho's Blog:
Twenty-nine years on, I am still free – because I discovered that love never enslaves us. I am free to turn my head and watch her sleeping at my side – that is the photo I have on my mobile phone. I am free for us to go out, enjoy a stroll, go on talking, discussing – and occasionally arguing, as always.
"The Daughter of an Abortion Protester" from It's a Beautiful Wreck
