Happy Friday, and happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
"Cinnamon Rolls: A Legacy of Love" from Pancakes Gone Awry:
As I ponder the cinnamon rolls that are rising right now, I realize that it is often the small, seemingly insignificant moments and actions that influence a person. It doesn't always take grand gestures or large sacrifices to make an imprint on a person. Most of the things I remember about my family members are not big trips or expensive presents, but the small kindnesses."You Don't Need a Title to Tell You What You Believe (but it sure does seem to make things easier)" from Momalom
"Mullet Over" from The Bucky Four-Eyes Cotillion
"Unwarranted Age" from foreverdusty.wordpress.com:
My father killed himself when I was seventeen. We buried him in our family’s plot in the town my grandmother was born, a tiny place in southern Idaho. That was ten years ago and I haven’t returned until this week."Between Being and Being Gone" from Ordinary Art
"An Ugly Truth" from I Am Doing the Best I Can
"The Undiscovered Country" from After Iris:
And I play my Ace: when your baby has died, a “good birth” is one that results in a live baby."7 Things: Tea" from Bag Lady
And people don’t want to fold, but how can they call me out when they know the hand I’m holding? My heart, a club to beat you with, a spade to bury her, diamonds turned to ashes. I’m the loser, last word be damned.
"Letty García's Mexican Salsa & Sun Chips" from Alex Waterhouse-Hayward
"If These People Knew How Crazy I Am..." from Dances With Fat:
It’s not easy being authentic – it’s a risk and it requires work. But then it certainly wasn’t easy pretending to be something less than what I am. In the end it’s the same amount of effort – it’s just a matter of what you want to put your effort toward. You choose."Mommmomomomomomom" from Anne Nahm
"What Comes In the Night" from Slouching Past 40
"I Say We Just Hold Him Down and Remove the Limb Entirely " from Pearl, Why You Little...:
“So I go to the pharmacy, right? I mean, they have to have something that will clear this up, right? So I walk in there, pull my pant leg up to show the pharmacist and this old guy gets mad! Tells me, Get out of here!” Jon laughs. “I mean, I’ve been thrown out of places, but never a pharmacy!”"Messages to Our Children" from Goddess In Progress
“It looked like a zombie leg,” Mary whispers. I look over at Jon, who winks at me. I look back to Mary. “Seriously. He even dragged the thing around, it hurt so bad.” She shakes her head, lights her own cigarette. “A zombie leg.”
"I Am Not Grown Up Enough For My Life" from Eat the Damn Cake
"How Dr. Phil Got Anorexia Wrong" from Surrender, Dorothy:
Chastising an anorexic works about as well as telling your teenaged Juliet not to take Romeo to the prom. You never made Romeo look better until you told her he was bad news."It's Been a Year" from That Girl Runs
"The One About the Gays" from Moosh In Indy
"Guest Post – Kris from Pretty All True" by Kris at The Red Dress Club:
She was tall, very tall and thin. Severe and mannish, despite her long skirts and flowing blouses. She wore strangely bulky shoes and she had an odd gait. Her shoes made a loud uneven clomping sound as she paced before the chalkboard and up and down the aisles to be sure that we understood our math assignments. She was far too old to have the burgundy-flamed hair that sat atop her pale stern face, but it never once occurred to me at the time that she had not been born with this hair. Please come back and share good writing with us over the coming week to be featured on the next Five Star Friday. If you have read a really good piece on someone else's weblog, submit it by Thursday at midnight CST to have it featured on Five Star Friday.
