More iPhone Photography, Featuring ColorSplash

Thursday, November 5, 2009   ·
As you may already know, I have been getting into iPhone photography lately. The camera apps I collect on my iPhone have become go-to tools for me when I find myself without my usual camera, and I have not been disappointed with the results. In fact, I am finding more and more that my iPhone is becoming my default camera.

My latest iPhone app acquisition is ColorSplash. I am not sure that it is something I will use very regularly, but I do love what I can do with it:
ColorSplash lets you quickly and easily give photos a dramatic look by converting them to black and white, while keeping your chosen details in color. This effect - known as a "cutout" or "selective color" - draws the viewers' attention to the colored areas.

Here is my original photo, which I took on Halloween using ShakeItPhoto:

Then I prettied it up with ColorSplash:

I found the app easy to use. It demands slightly different touch commands on your iPhone screen, but they become second-nature within minutes, and if you get stuck, there are a couple of good introductory videos that come with it right on your iPhone to get you started.

ColorSplash also allows you to invert the areas you select and save the photo again with the opposite effect:

See? It worked out beautifully, and this was just my first go at it. I even almost prefer the inverted version with the black-and-white in the foreground.

ColorSplash gets the Schmutzie thumbs up.

You know, I keep telling myself that I do not need an iPhone. Then I read posts like this.

Love it.

You need to stop telling me about amazing iPhone apps like this one because the minute I hear about them my fingers float directly to the BUY button and I can't stop myself!

Bad bad Schmutzie. You're slowly destroying my bank account...

Can we get colour splash elsewhere besides the iPhonery?

dk, if you google "colorsplash pc", you'll find a couple of downloads. I haven't tried any for my laptop, though.
