The Page 123 Meme

Tuesday, February 12, 2008   ·
Both Cecilieaux from Shavings Off My Mind and Wench from Wenchwire have tagged me to do the same meme, which is a good thing, because memes are spreading like scabies through a group of hippies, and I have more than one stacked up to do.

The rules:
  1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
  2. Open the book to page 123.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the next three sentences.
  5. Tag five people.
The book nearest me is Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything Is Illuminated. I have not read one word of it aside from the cover.

The reason that it is near me is that I grabbed it off the bookshelf this morning so that I had something, anything, in my purse. I left my usual purse in a cab last night, and now I have no ID, no bank card, no receipts for reimbursement through my health plan, no notebook with my latest writing, and no hair goo. Carrying another purse with a book inside it that I am not even reading was a desperate act at 7:45 a.m. to feel less lost as I started my day, but it has turned out to be a good thing. You do not have to suffer through the telephone book's yellow pages or a Microsoft Excel manual.

Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything Is Illuminated, Page 123, Sentences 6 to 8:
He sometimes looked in the mirror for hours at a time, making faces, tensing muscles, winking, smiling, puckering. He had never seen another man naked, and so had no idea if his body was normal. The word "butterfly" made him blush, although he didn't know why.

Five people, who may or may not participate, depending on their desire, are tagged:
  • Ingrid from Ice Cream Is Nice Cream
  • Uberfrau from Happy Friday
  • Aithne from BellaDrama
  • Mariposa from Mariposa's Tales
  • Rockycat

This should be interesting. I am at work so, looking about, I see that the nearest real (as in something not GBC bound) book is "Piping Engineering", sixth edition, copyright 1986 by Tube Turns, Inc. On page 123 we find ourselves in the midst of discussions at the end of a chapter titled Fatigue Tests on Flanged Assemblies by A.R.C. Markl and H.H. George. I am assuming that the fifth sentence means the fifth complete sentence. The first sentence that follows is the end of the discussion by H.F. Moore and is followed by the start of J.J. Murphy's introspections:

"Thus the assembly can be judged on the basis either of comparison of stress range for a given endurance or of comparison of endurance for a given stress range of a straight-pipe specimen.

"The authors are to be congratulated on having made a valuable contribution of test data on the performance of various flange types, on the organization of the tests, and presentation of the results for handy reference. There has been too little information available on this subject, and the paper is a fitting supplement to the senior author's previous paper."

Hear! Hear! Way to go, Markl!

Sadly, I have read (well, more like referred to) much of this book over the years.

OK, that was not so much interesting as, um, what's the phrase? OH, mind-numbing. Sorry about that. Maybe I'll try again from home.

I'm still in awe that you're not completely freaking out over a lost purse. I wouldn't even be able to write, but less pay attention to actual directions!

The Hotfessional, I was freaking out ALL DAY. I mean near weeping. But I get to be okay, because my purse was found! Hoorah.

I'm doing it! I think it's fun! Thanks!

Ooo the number of unopened books! I've done that one too but it's still in draft. Well done for making a start.
    Cheers

P.s. what are all those new little nibbly bits at the bottom of the comments box from blogger?

Does anyone know what they mean?

    Did we vote for this?

Now that is a cool meme - not requiring photographs or standing up (I seem perpetually stuck in my chair, except when I'm searching for chocolate brownies.)

Damn the snow - I wanted to run errands today. No way now.

    Did mine!

Seeing it has taken me 2 years to even consider recovering from loosing my wedding rings, the thought of loosing my purse would be second on the list of stressing out over loosing things.

    Cool meme BTW.

Just for fun, I'm horning in with the closest book to me--The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe:

    Still there was no answer.

"Just like a girl," said Edmund to himself, "sulking somewhere, and won't accept an apology." He looked round him again and decided he did not much like this place, and had almost made up his mind to go home, when he heard, very far off inthe wood, a sound of bells.
